The Second Law of Thermodynamics The drive of a system toward the equilibrium state does not necessarily imply that the energy (enthalpy) of the system is decreasing nor that the entropy of the system is increasing. We have already encountered examples of spontaneous endothermic reactions (enthalpy increases), and of spontaneous reactions in which the entropy of the system decreases. This further illustrates the competition between the drive toward maximum entropy and the drive toward minimum enthalpy of the same system. We need additional criteria for predicting the spontaneity of reactions in which the entropy and enthalpy factors oppose each other. These criteria must take into account temperature, entropy changes, enthalpy changes, and also relate to the Second Law of Thermodynamics which states that the entropy of the universe increases for any spontaneous process.

Applied to chemical systems, the second law indicates that the entropy of a system may increase or decrease but if it does decrease, then the entropy of the surroundings must increase to a greater extent so that the overall entropy change in the universe is positive.
